Football icon Luka Modric is taking his first steps into club ownership as he prepares for life beyond the pitch. The Real Madrid and Croatia legend is set to become a minority owner of English Championship side Swansea City.
At 39, Modric—who’s still under contract at Real Madrid—is already thinking ahead. According to top transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, he will be joining the Swansea ownership group, which includes Jason Cohen, Brett Cravatt, Nigel Morris, and Andy Coleman. This group had previously taken over the club from former majority owners Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien.
While Modric’s current focus is on helping Real Madrid pull off a Champions League comeback against Arsenal, his investment in the Welsh club signals a clear intent to transition smoothly into football management or club development after retirement.
The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, whose net worth is estimated around £56 million, has reportedly finalized an agreement to buy shares in Swansea. The club, despite facing a £15.2 million pre-tax loss in its last financial year, still holds strong ambitions.
Swansea City’s turnover for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, was £21.5 million. A club statement acknowledged the financial challenges of competing in the Championship, citing rising operational costs and a lack of financial redistribution from the Premier League.
“The club will continue to focus on achieving operational efficiencies to maximize the resources that can be invested into the first-team squad,” the board stated. “In the absence of redistribution from the Premier League, ownership support remains crucial.”
For now, Modric remains focused on the UCL quarterfinal clash at the Santiago Bernabéu—where Madrid are looking to overcome a three-goal deficit against Arsenal. But beyond that, a new chapter in his football journey is already unfolding—this time, from the boardroom.
