Kano — The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has publicly rejected the conditions imposed by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for his return to the party, claiming they are unacceptable and incompatible with the party’s principles.
Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), recently proposed that any pact for his return must protect the interests of his party and movement, Kwankwasiyya. He insisted that, in every state, the NNPP and Kwankwasiyya must maintain a visible presence, including positions such as gubernatorial and senatorial candidacies.
However, the state leadership of the APC has responded strongly. Party officials say that while defectors are welcome, they must first respect the party’s constitution and show humility. They rejected demands for special recognition or preferential treatment, specifically insisting that all members, old or new, must receive equal treatment according to APC rules.
In addition to internal expectations, the APC in Kano has also demanded that those seeking to return and who have made derogatory comments against President Bola Tinubu or his vice president publicly retract their comments. This, according to the APC, is essential to building trust and unity within the party.
Local APC groups have also opposed Kwankwaso’s conditions. Some believe these conditions could jeopardize the APC’s internal cohesion, while others claim they undermine the meritocratic selection of candidates.
