Global anti-poverty organisation Oxfam has raised concerns over Elon Musk’s expected rise to trillionaire status, warning that the unprecedented concentration of wealth in the hands of a single individual poses significant challenges to democracy and economic equality.
The organisation made the remarks as Musk’s personal fortune is projected to surpass the one-trillion-dollar mark following the anticipated public offering of SpaceX, a development that could make him the world’s first trillionaire.
According to Oxfam’s latest analysis, Musk’s wealth has increased by more than $550 billion over the past year, averaging over $1 million every minute.
The organisation argued that such extraordinary wealth accumulation reflects decades of economic policies that have disproportionately benefited the ultra-rich while widening the gap between wealthy individuals and ordinary citizens.
Oxfam America’s Senior Director of Economic Justice, Nabil Ahmed, described the development as a troubling milestone for democratic societies.
“Elon Musk’s rise to trillionaire status marks a new pinnacle of oligarchy and a dark day for democracy,” Ahmed said.
He argued that the accumulation of such vast wealth was not inevitable but rather the result of policy choices that favoured billionaires and large corporations.
The organisation estimates that a fortune of $1 trillion would exceed the combined wealth of approximately 3.8 billion people, representing nearly 46 per cent of the global population.
Oxfam highlighted the scale of the figure by noting that if Musk spent $1 million every day, it would take him roughly 2,740 years to spend $1 trillion.
The group also claimed that a 10 per cent tax on a trillion-dollar fortune could generate enough revenue to help lift hundreds of millions of people above the global extreme poverty line for a year.
Ahmed warned that extreme economic inequality often translates into political influence, giving wealthy individuals greater power over public policy and democratic institutions.
According to Oxfam, billionaires are significantly more likely to hold political influence and shape policies that protect their interests.
The organisation cited Musk’s business activities and political involvement as examples of how concentrated wealth can affect governance, public policy and economic outcomes.
Oxfam also pointed to government contracts received by some of Musk’s companies, including SpaceX and Starlink, while arguing that billionaire influence can affect public institutions and decision-making processes.
The report further criticised reductions in certain social and development programmes, claiming that such measures often have the greatest impact on vulnerable populations.
In addition, the organisation expressed concerns about the role of social media platforms in spreading misinformation and polarising public discourse.
Oxfam maintained that governments around the world must take stronger action to address wealth inequality through progressive taxation, stronger regulation of monopolies and increased investment in public services.
The organisation also called for policies aimed at protecting workers’ rights, improving wages and reducing the concentration of economic power among a small group of ultra-wealthy individuals.
While Musk remains one of the most influential entrepreneurs in the world through companies such as SpaceX, Tesla and X, the debate surrounding his growing wealth has reignited broader discussions about inequality, taxation and the relationship between wealth and political power.
The expected milestone is likely to intensify global conversations about how governments should respond to rising concentrations of wealth and their impact on society, democracy and economic opportunity.
