The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, says insecurity in the northern region has worsened from a local concern into a national emergency reinforcing the need for the creation of state police.

Yahaya made the remark during a high-level security meeting involving all 19 northern governors, alongside top traditional rulers, held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna. He described state policing as a critical tool needed to confront the security threats overwhelming the region.

The governor attributed the persistent crisis to deep-rooted socio-economic problems, including poor infrastructure, widespread poverty, environmental degradation, illiteracy and rising unemployment. He urged leaders across the North to intensify efforts to address these structural challenges.

Yahaya praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for recent interventions that facilitated the release of kidnapped victims and encouraged the federal government to sustain the momentum. He reaffirmed the region’s commitment to partnering with security agencies, traditional institutions and the federal government to protect citizens and secure schools and communities.

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, noted that northern governors are already adopting joint strategies such as peer review systems to enhance governance and improve service delivery. He also underscored the importance of traditional rulers in strengthening social cohesion.

The Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, assured the governors of the unwavering support of traditional institutions. He called on state governments to prioritise good governance as a foundation for peace and stability in the region.
