Joao Cancelo is back where he feels most at home. Barcelona has confirmed the return of the Portuguese defender, on loan from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, until the end of the season, giving Hansi Flick a vital defensive boost ahead of the upcoming final.
“There are places you never forget,” Barça announced on social media. “Welcome back to Barcelona, Joao.” The message summed up the excitement surrounding Cancelo’s return after a short but important first spell at the club.
The 31-year-old right-back spent the 2023/24 season at Camp Nou on loan from Manchester City, where he quickly became a fan favorite. Cancelo made 42 appearances in all competitions, impressing with his attacking talent, versatility, and experience at the highest level.
After joining Al-Hilal for £21 million in 2024, Cancelo struggled to find regular playing time in Saudi Arabia, prompting a reunion with the Catalan giants. The move also benefits Barcelona, which is seeking defensive depth amid injuries and financial difficulties.
Although Barcelona initially announced Cancelo’s arrival on Tuesday, the unveiling was briefly delayed due to procedural issues. The deal was ultimately finalized after La Liga regulations allowed the club to register a new player following Andreas Christensen’s knee ligament injury, freeing up part of the defender’s wages.
Cancelo’s return comes at a crucial time for league leaders Barcelona, as they balance domestic ambitions with cup commitments. The experienced defender is expected to fit perfectly into Flick’s plans, starting with Thursday’s Copa del Rey round of 16 tie against Racing de Santander.
