Kebbi State has been rocked by a deadly attack that left 33 people dead in Bui District, Arewa Local Government Area, following a violent cattle-rustling incident.

The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the fatalities in a statement issued on February 20, 2026. Spokesman Bashir Usman said additional security personnel and operational assets have been deployed to the area. “Sustained patrols are underway to restore and maintain stability,” Usman stated.

Authorities expressed deep regret over the loss of lives and extended condolences to affected families and the wider Arewa community. Preliminary investigations indicate that suspected Lakurawa militants crossed into Bui District from Gudu Local Government Area in neighbouring Sokoto State to rustle cattle.

Residents from Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago mobilised to confront the intruders, leading to a fatal clash. Local sources reported that the attackers stormed villages in the border district, opening fire indiscriminately on residents.

The assaults caused panic, forcing many civilians to flee their homes. Security operatives were quickly deployed to secure the communities, assist survivors, and prevent the attackers from escaping. Ongoing tracking operations aim to apprehend those responsible.

Police warned residents against engaging armed groups directly and urged reporting suspicious activities through official security channels, emphasizing the extreme risks posed by such confrontations.
