The Independent National Electoral Commission has dismissed claims that its chairman, Joash Amupitan, was behind a controversial post on X allegedly showing support for the All Progressives Congress.

Speaking on the issue, the commission’s Director of ICT, Lawrence Bayode, stated that there is currently no confirmed forensic evidence connecting the chairman to the viral content.

He explained that while some individuals have claimed to analyse the account, such findings have not been officially verified. According to him, the commission is relying strictly on credible digital evidence before reaching any conclusions.

INEC has, however, escalated the matter by involving security agencies and plans to engage independent digital experts to conduct further forensic analysis.

Bayode emphasised that screenshots alone are not sufficient proof, noting that the commission would base its final position on thorough technical investigation rather than social media claims.

Addressing the role of artificial intelligence, he cautioned that tools like Grok can sometimes generate inaccurate or misleading information.

He explained that such systems are capable of producing false outputs, making it important for the public to verify sensitive information before accepting it as fact.

The ICT director also pointed out that social media accounts can be manipulated or even created using another person’s identity, especially where security measures are weak. He added that account renaming and content alteration could further complicate verification.

INEC warned that digital impersonation and misinformation remain serious threats, as they can easily mislead the public and create confusion around critical national issues.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing, with the commission assuring Nigerians that the truth will be established through proper digital forensics.
