At least 14 people have died and 20 others were injured following a boiler explosion at a power plant operated by Vedanta Ltd in India’s central state of Chhattisgarh, local authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at the company’s facility in Singhitarai, located about 230 kilometres from the state capital, Raipur. The cause of the explosion was not immediately established, officials said.
District Superintendent of Police P.K. Thakur said the death toll had risen as more victims succumbed to their injuries. “The death toll from the Vedanta power plant blast in Chhattisgarh has risen to 14, and the number of injured has increased to 20,” he told Reuters.
Thakur added that preliminary findings suggest the blast may have been triggered by overheating in a boiler tube, although investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause.
In a statement, Vedanta Ltd described the घटना as an “unfortunate incident” and said a comprehensive investigation had been launched. The company also indicated it was working to establish the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
Industrial accidents have periodically raised safety concerns in India’s manufacturing and energy sectors, with authorities often initiating probes to assess compliance with safety standards. The outcome of the investigation into the Vedanta plant blast is expected to inform any further regulatory or safety measures.
