Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has called on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to provide a new examination date for eight UTME candidates recently freed after an abduction in the state.
The governor made the request while receiving the rescued passengers in Makurdi on Sunday.
He said the students should not be punished academically because they became victims of insecurity while trying to reach their examination centre.
According to the governor, the candidates were among travellers heading to Otukpo when armed attackers intercepted their bus and took several passengers away.
He explained that a few victims regained freedom earlier, while others were later recovered through coordinated security operations.
Alia praised the efforts of police officers and other security agencies involved in the mission.
He also appreciated community members who assisted authorities with information and support during the search.
The governor urged JAMB to consider the difficult experience faced by the candidates and allow them another chance to sit for the examination.
He stressed that the young students were focused on their education before the attack suddenly disrupted their plans.
Alia further instructed health officials to ensure all rescued victims undergo medical evaluation and receive treatment before returning home.
He noted that their physical and emotional wellbeing should be treated as a priority after the traumatic incident.
The governor also commended security leaders for ongoing efforts to curb kidnapping in Benue State.
However, he asked agencies to intensify operations in isolated areas where criminal groups are believed to be hiding.
He said peace and safety remain essential for residents across the state.
Police authorities earlier confirmed that suspects connected to the abduction had been arrested and investigations were ongoing.
The attack happened while passengers were travelling along the Taraku-Otukpo route, causing widespread concern among families and residents.
With the victims now rescued, attention has shifted to whether JAMB will approve a fresh examination schedule for the affected candidates.
