Former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu has admitted that his past drug use derailed what could have been a Ballon d’Or-winning career, calling it the worst decision of his life.

Now 46, Mutu was handed an eight-month suspension after testing positive for cocaine while at Chelsea. In a heartfelt interview with The Telegraph, the Romanian opened up about how his choices shaped his footballing journey.

“Taking cocaine at Chelsea was the worst mistake of my career,” Mutu confessed. “I was alone and struggling, but that doesn’t justify what I did. Chelsea had a zero-tolerance policy, and I paid the price.”

Mutu reflected on how unprepared he was for the pressures of elite football, admitting that personal struggles and loneliness pushed him toward poor decisions.

Looking back, he firmly believes he had the talent to be the best in the world.

“For more than a season, I was among the best players globally. I could have won the Ballon d’Or easily, but my bad decisions held me back,” he said. “I try not to dwell on it, but I know what I lost.”
