A late-night crash in Lagos has left one person dead after a minibus collided with a parked truck belonging to the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in Ketu.

The incident occurred just before midnight on Monday when a commercial minibus, known locally as a “korope,” crashed into the LAWMA truck. According to Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the driver of the minibus appeared to have been reckless, while the LAWMA truck was improperly parked without the required caution signs.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the minibus driver failed to exercise caution, and the LAWMA truck was not parked according to safety regulations,” said Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu. Unfortunately, the crash led to the death of a LAWMA official who was performing his duties at the time.

Despite efforts by LASEMA’s emergency teams, the LAWMA worker succumbed to his injuries before help could arrive. The minibus driver, who was severely injured, received immediate medical care at the scene.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage— the LAWMA truck suffered only minor rear-end damage, but the minibus’s front was heavily destroyed.

A thorough recovery operation was carried out, and the deceased LAWMA official’s remains were handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU). The scene has since been cleared, and normal traffic flow has resumed.

LASEMA urged all drivers to be more cautious on the roads and emphasized the importance of following safety regulations, especially when it comes to parking vehicles.
