The Lagos State House of Assembly is facing a leadership crisis following the controversial removal of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over alleged financial misconduct.
Amid rising political tension, All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Babatunde Bank-Anthony has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, he stressed that Sanwo-Olu must not remain silent, as the Assembly plays a crucial role in state governance.
Security forces, including the Department of State Services (DSS), reportedly sealed off the Assembly complex, preventing lawmakers from accessing the chambers. Despite the blockade, newly elected Speaker Mojisola Meranda led legislators in holding a plenary session.
Bank-Anthony dismissed calls for President Bola Tinubu’s intervention, arguing that Lagos should handle its internal affairs independently.
Meanwhile, Obasa has challenged his impeachment in court, asserting that the Assembly was in recess when the proceedings took place.
Bashorun Olorunfunmi, a member of the Lagos Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), defended the Assembly’s right to elect its leadership without external interference. Similarly, APC leader Fouad Oki warned that the ongoing crisis could escalate into a constitutional standoff with national implications.
