The Federal University of Lokoja in Kogi State has announced an indefinite closure following a tragic road accident on Monday that claimed the lives of seven students and a bus driver. The incident occurred around 2:30 pm when an articulated truck carrying wood and palm oil lost control and collided with a shuttle bus transporting students to the university.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck, speeding at the time, rammed into the bus, completely crushing it. Seven students were confirmed dead at the scene, while others were left in shock and mourning.
In the wake of the tragedy, students staged large protests, demanding immediate action to prevent future accidents. In response, the university’s management, following advice from state security agencies, declared an indefinite closure. A circular signed by the university’s registrar, Dr. Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie, stated that students were to vacate both campuses by 12 noon on Thursday, February 20, 2025. The decision was made after protests led to blocked university gates, despite efforts by the state government and the university’s management to restore calm.
The closure aims to maintain order and prevent further unrest after the devastating incident.
