Spain’s star footballer, Jenni Hermoso, has finally closed a painful chapter in her career, declaring “Now, it’s over” after ex-football federation president Luis Rubiales was found guilty of sexual assault.

A Spanish High Court judge ruled on Thursday that Rubiales’ forcible kiss after Spain’s Women’s World Cup victory in 2023 constituted sexual assault, sentencing him to a fine of 10,800 euros ($11,300) but sparing him jail time.

Hermoso, who became a symbol of resilience and justice in the fight against misconduct in sports, reflected on the verdict in an emotional Instagram post.

“After everything, this sets an important precedent in a society where there is still so much work to be done,” she wrote. “My heart is full of gratitude for those who have stood by me, and who will continue this fight. And now, yes, it’s over.”

The phrase “it’s over” became a rallying cry for Hermoso and her teammates in their pursuit of justice, following months of legal battles and global outrage.

Rubiales, who initially refused to step down, was eventually forced out amid mounting pressure. Despite the conviction, his lawyer, Ángel Chavarría, confirmed plans to appeal the ruling, while prosecutors had originally sought a harsher sentence of two and a half years in prison.

Although he was acquitted of coercion—charges that alleged he pressured Hermoso to publicly state the kiss was consensual—Rubiales maintains his innocence and vows to fight the verdict.

For Hermoso, however, the message is clear: this moment marks a turning point—not just for her, but for the future of women in sports.
