In a bold move to enhance safety on Nigeria’s waterways, the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has inaugurated a Special Committee on the Prevention of Boat Mishaps.

The inauguration, led by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, highlights the government’s commitment to protecting lives and ensuring a safer and more sustainable marine transport system.

Speaking at the event, Oyetola stressed the critical role of waterways in commerce, transportation, and livelihoods. He expressed deep concern over the frequent boat mishaps, which have led to tragic losses.

“Our waterways are essential to economic growth and community connectivity, but the recurring incidents of boat mishaps demand urgent intervention,” he said.

The newly formed committee has been tasked with conducting a thorough review of commercial boat operations, identifying root causes of accidents, and recommending sustainable solutions.

Chaired by the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Bola Oyebamiji, the committee includes representatives from four states, maritime safety experts, boat operators, dredging associations, and key government agencies.

The initiative aligns with the 2024 International World Maritime Day theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First.”

Oyebamiji, in his response, commended Oyetola’s proactive leadership, assuring that the committee would work diligently to fulfill its mandate.

With a strong team in place and a clear mission, the committee’s recommendations could mark a turning point in ensuring safer and more efficient water transport across Nigeria.
