Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has paid a glowing tribute to Kevin De Bruyne, calling him one of the greatest players in Premier League history after the Belgian midfielder confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season.
De Bruyne, 33, has been a driving force behind City’s dominance in English football since his arrival from Wolfsburg in 2015 for £55 million ($72 million). Over nearly a decade, he has amassed an impressive haul of 14 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and the club’s first-ever Champions League triumph in 2023.
With 106 goals and 174 assists in 413 appearances, De Bruyne’s influence has been undeniable.
“He is one of the greatest midfielders ever to play in this country and for this club—there is no doubt,” Guardiola said on Friday. “We’ve won a lot of trophies, and he’s been involved in every single one.”
Injuries and Legacy
While injuries have limited his game time in recent seasons, Guardiola highlighted De Bruyne’s remarkable consistency and impact over the years.
“Except for the last year or so due to injuries, his consistency in every game, every competition, is what makes him unique,” Guardiola added. “His assists, goals, and vision in the final third—so difficult to replace.”
Given City’s tradition of honoring club legends, with statues of Vincent Kompany, David Silva, and Sergio Aguero already standing outside the Etihad, Guardiola strongly believes De Bruyne will receive the same recognition.
“I’d bet a lot of money that it will happen. He deserves to be at that level,” he said.
What’s Next for De Bruyne?
It remains uncertain whether De Bruyne’s final City appearance will be in the Premier League or if he will extend his stay for the FIFA Club World Cup, which runs from June 14 to July 13. His contract officially expires at the end of June.
When asked about De Bruyne’s next steps, Guardiola admitted: “It’s a good question—I don’t know. He has to decide. I hope he continues playing somewhere, but it depends on risk and contracts for the future.”
One thing is certain: whether at City or beyond, Kevin De Bruyne’s legacy as one of football’s finest playmakers is already cemented.
