British actor and comedian Russell Brand has been formally charged with rape and sexual assault involving four women, with the alleged incidents taking place between 1999 and 2005. The charges come after an extensive investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches, which revealed serious accusations against the comedian and media personality.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the charges, which include one count of rape in Bournemouth (1999), an indecent assault in Westminster (2001), oral rape and sexual assault in Westminster (2004), and another sexual assault between 2004 and 2005 in Westminster.
Brand, who has previously denied all accusations, posted a video on X (formerly Twitter), where he stated: “What I never was, was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in non-consensual activity.” He further emphasized, “I’m now going to have the opportunity to defend these charges in court, and I’m incredibly grateful for that.”
The charges stem from a joint investigation that began in 2023, and Brand has reportedly been interviewed by police multiple times in connection with the allegations. While Brand is currently believed to be in the US, authorities have not ruled out extradition should he fail to cooperate with the legal proceedings.
Brand is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2. In February, an anonymous woman (referred to as AGX) filed a civil lawsuit against Brand, accusing him of “personal injury” and “sexual abuse”.
Jaswant Narwal of the Crown Prosecution Service said: “We have today authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge Russell Brand with a number of sexual offences… These relate to reported non-recent offences between 1999 and 2005, involving four women.”
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy assured that the women involved are being supported by specially trained officers, and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Brand, who initially rose to fame in the early 2000s as a controversial stand-up comedian and TV host, later gained international fame through film roles and his often-provocative media persona. In recent years, he has amassed a large online following, known for his skeptical views on politics, media, and wellness.
The unfolding legal battle has left many questions about Brand’s future career and the impact of these allegations on his public image.
