Katsina United Football Club announced on Tuesday the death of its newly signed player, Ozoh Chinedu, following a medical emergency during a pre-season friendly match against Niger Tornadoes Football Club.
The incident occurred at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina while the two teams were preparing for the upcoming football season. According to the club’s Media Directorate, Chinedu collapsed during the match, received immediate attention from medical personnel on the pitch, and was rushed to K-Dara Specialist Hospital for urgent treatment. Despite these efforts, he passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
In an official statement titled “Sad news: Katsina United player Ozoh Chinedu dies during pre-season friendly,” the club said the circumstances surrounding the sudden death had not yet been fully established. Further details were expected from medical authorities or the player’s family. Chinedu had recently joined Katsina United after previously playing for Kano Pillars FC and was expected to contribute to the team’s campaign in the new season.
Reports indicated that the collapse took place approximately 10 to 15 minutes after the match began. The news has left teammates, coaches, club management, supporters and the wider Nigerian football community in mourning.
Katsina State Governor Malam Dikko Radda expressed shock and deep sadness over the death, extending condolences to the player’s family and the club.
The sudden loss has renewed attention on medical preparedness at football venues in Nigeria.
