Jeff Bezos-Backed Slate Launches $20,000 Electric Vehicle, the Cheapest EV in the U.S. Market

Slate Auto, a new electric vehicle startup backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has officially emerged from stealth mode with the introduction of its first EV — a radically affordable and modular electric truck. Starting at just $27,500 before incentives, or as low as $20,000 after U.S. federal tax credits, Slate’s debut vehicle is now the most affordable EV available in America.
Slate’s mission is clear: to challenge what “affordable” really means in the auto industry. “The definition of what’s affordable is broken,” said CEO Chris Barman. “Slate exists to put the power back in the hands of customers who have been ignored by the auto industry. Slate is a radical truck platform so customizable that it can transform from a 2-seat pickup to a 5-seat SUV.”
Despite its budget-friendly price, the vehicle lacks many standard features Americans typically expect — such as a stereo, touchscreen, power windows, or even factory paint jobs. However, it does come equipped with air conditioning and mandatory safety features like automatic emergency braking and a backup camera.
Designed more for local use than long-distance travel, the Slate truck offers a modest 150-mile range. But its strength lies in its flexibility: over 100 optional accessories can be added — many of which are designed for easy DIY installation. These include aesthetic wraps, power windows, running boards, spare tire carriers, and even the SUV conversion kit.
When compared to premium electric trucks like the Tesla Cybertruck ($82,235), Ford F-150 Lightning ($62,995), Chevy Silverado EV ($87,300), GMC Hummer EV ($98,845), and Rivian R1T ($69,900), Slate is carving out a disruptive niche in the EV market.
Interested buyers can reserve the vehicle now for just $50, with full production details expected to follow in the coming months.
