The political crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has intensified following the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to delist Senator David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official records as the party’s National Chairman and National Secretary respectively.
INEC said it had removed the names of the two party leaders from its database amid an ongoing leadership dispute that has divided the ADC into rival factions. The commission also stated that it would not recognise any conventions or congresses organised by the Mark–Aregbesola faction pending the outcome of a substantive case before the Federal High Court.
The action follows a judgment of the Court of Appeal which directed all parties involved in the dispute to maintain the status quo while legal proceedings continue. INEC maintained that its actions are guided strictly by judicial pronouncements and its mandate to remain neutral in internal party conflicts.
The leadership tussle within the ADC has persisted for months, with competing groups laying claim to the control of the party’s structure at the national level. The latest development effectively places a suspension on the activities of the Mark–Aregbesola-led faction until the courts make a final determination.
Political observers note that the situation could have implications for the party’s internal stability and its preparations ahead of future electoral activities, as unresolved leadership disputes often affect coordination, membership confidence, and participation in national politics.
INEC’s position underscores its reliance on court rulings in addressing disputes arising from political parties, particularly in matters concerning the recognition of party executives and the legitimacy of party structures.
