In a thrilling turn of events, Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Real Madrid has guaranteed the Premier League at least five teams in next season’s UEFA Champions League. The English top-flight will now boast an additional Champions League spot thanks to the success of its clubs in European competitions.
The Premier League’s top four automatically qualify for the prestigious tournament, but with English clubs dominating Europe, the country has earned a coveted top-two finish in UEFA’s association club coefficient rankings. This gives the Premier League an extra slot, known as the European Performance Spot.
Currently leading the rankings, England is ahead of Spain and Italy, thanks to outstanding performances from clubs like Arsenal and Aston Villa in the Champions League, Manchester United and Tottenham in the Europa League, and Chelsea in the Conference League.
Next season could see as many as seven English clubs in the Champions League—five from the Premier League’s top spots, plus the Champions League winners and Europa League winners, should they finish outside the top five.
While Liverpool remains almost certain to claim the Premier League title, Arsenal’s position in second place is looking strong. However, competition for the remaining Champions League spots is fierce, with just six points separating third-placed Nottingham Forest and seventh-placed Villa.
