Makurdi — The late Chief Audu Ogbeh, former Minister of Agriculture and respected statesman, was remembered in an emotional valedictory session of the Benue State House of Assembly, with leaders across the state describing him as a patriot whose legacy will endure.
Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by his deputy, Sam Ode, praised Ogbeh’s lifelong commitment to service. He recalled Ogbeh’s years as national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (2001–2005) and highlighted his reputation as a man of integrity who consistently put his people first.
Assembly Speaker Alfred Emberga also paid glowing tribute, noting that Ogbeh’s voice in parliament was always used to fight for welfare, justice and development. He said the late politician’s legislative activism marked him out as a leader who refused to compromise on issues affecting his people.
Ogbeh’s journey in politics began in the Second Republic as a representative of the Otukpa constituency, where he later became Deputy Speaker of the Benue Assembly. From there, he grew into a national figure, eventually serving as Agriculture Minister under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
At the special session, former deputy governor Steven Lawani, alongside ex-lawmakers and dignitaries from Benue’s three senatorial districts, shared their memories of the late elder statesman. For many, Ogbeh’s contributions to both state and national politics remain a model for younger generations to emulate.
Chief Audu Ogbeh passed away on August 9, 2025, at the age of 78.
