The Senator representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, Sunday Marshall Katung, is expected to formally join the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday, November 1, 2025, marking a major political shift in Southern Kaduna’s long-standing support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The move will bring to an end over two decades of the region’s loyalty to the main opposition party.
Reliable sources revealed that Senator Katung’s defection follows weeks of high-level consultations with top APC figures, including Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani and influential members of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political circle in Abuja.
Political observers say the Senator’s defection reflects a broader realignment in Kaduna’s political landscape, where pragmatism and access to development opportunities are taking precedence over party affiliation.
Just two weeks earlier, Senator Katung had dismissed rumours of his planned defection, describing them as baseless and reaffirming his commitment to the PDP. His media office at the time urged the public to ignore the speculation, calling it a distraction from his duties at the National Assembly.
However, insiders close to the Senator now confirm that the decision is final, citing the need for Southern Kaduna to “connect with the government at the centre” after years in the opposition.
Since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, all senators representing Kaduna South have emerged under the PDP banner, making the zone one of the strongest bastions of the party in the state. Katung’s defection, analysts note, could significantly reshape the region’s political dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
