China has reaffirmed its support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and cautioned the United States against meddling in Nigeria’s domestic affairs, following remarks attributed to former U.S. President Donald Trump threatening possible military action over alleged religious persecution.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stressed that Beijing rejects the use of religion or human rights as a pretext for external interference or coercion against sovereign nations. She emphasized that China stands firmly with Nigeria as a “comprehensive strategic partner,” and supports the country in pursuing its own development path.

The comments were shared by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, via his X handle. Onanuga has repeatedly maintained on behalf of the Nigerian government that there is no religious discrimination or persecution in the country.
