Operatives of the Kebbi State Police Command have killed one suspected bandit and rescued several kidnapped victims during coordinated operations in Maiyama and Shanga Local Government Areas of the state.

The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday, noting that the operations were carried out in response to separate attacks on two communities — Botoro Gadi in Maiyama LGA and Kwari village in Shanga LGA.

According to the statement, eight armed men invaded the home of one Alhaji Sani in Botoro Gadi, Mungadi area, and abducted two residents, identified as Muhafi Sani and Shamsiya Aliyu.

Upon receiving a distress call, the Divisional Police Officer in Maiyama led a joint team of officers and local vigilantes to the area, where they engaged the kidnappers in a fierce gun duel.

“One of the suspects was fatally injured during the exchange of fire, and his locally made firearm along with an empty cartridge was recovered at the scene,” Abubakar said.

In a separate incident, another group of bandits launched an attack on Kwari village in Giron Masa district of Shanga LGA, abducting two persons, Suleiman and Yunwa Suleiman. However, the quick response of police officers, assisted by military personnel and vigilantes, forced the assailants to abandon their captives and flee into the forest with gunshot wounds.

In a related development, police operatives apprehended one Musa Muhammad at Takware village in Shanga for illegal possession of ammunition. Items recovered from him included three live rounds and 20 spent shells of 7.62×39mm calibre.

Abubakar confirmed that all rescued victims had been safely reunited with their families after receiving medical attention. He reiterated the command’s commitment to intensifying its fight against criminal activities across the state.

The police spokesperson recalled that in October, officers neutralised three members of the notorious Lakurawa bandit group during a gun battle in Gorun Yamma village, Dandi Local Government Area.

“The Command remains fully committed to safeguarding lives and property across Kebbi State,” Abubakar assured.
