Residents of Iluke community in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State were thrown into mourning on Wednesday after armed bandits attacked a secondary school and killed three people, including a vice principal and a six-year-old child.
The attack occurred around 10:00 a.m. when dozens of armed men reportedly stormed Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu, sparking panic among students, teachers, and residents.
According to the Kogi State Police Command, the attackers arrived on about 40 motorcycles and were suspected to be planning a large-scale abduction of students and community members.
Police spokesperson, ASP Saliu Afusat, said the Divisional Police Officer of Kabba ‘A’ Division quickly mobilised security personnel after distress calls were received. Officers from the Police Mobile Force, tactical units, military personnel, and local vigilantes joined forces to confront the attackers.
The combined security team engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat into nearby bushes before they could carry out their mission.
Authorities said preliminary investigations have not confirmed any successful mass abduction during the incident. However, security agencies are continuing assessments and investigations to establish the full details of the attack.
The police confirmed that three people lost their lives during the invasion. The victims were identified as Mr. Ganiyu Anifowose, Vice Principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School, Iluke; Mr. Sunday Jacob Alhassan, aged 70; and six-year-old Sunday Ayele.
Security operatives also neutralised one of the attackers during the exchange of gunfire. In addition, a member of the joint security team sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The tragic incident has renewed concerns over insecurity in parts of Kogi State, especially rural communities that continue to face threats from armed criminal groups.
Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police ordered sustained bush-combing operations and confidence-building patrols across the affected area. Security operatives have also intensified efforts to track down fleeing suspects and prevent further attacks.
The police urged residents to remain calm and support security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations.
Authorities said further updates would be provided as operations continue and more details emerge from the investigation.
