The introduction of degree programs in Tiv and Nupe at Nigerian universities is anticipated, as the Federal Government, through the National Commission on Universities (NUC), has begun developing academic standards for these two indigenous languages. This move reflects a renewed commitment to protecting Nigeria’s cultural and linguistic heritage.
According to the NUC, a team of academic experts from various universities has been assembled to design the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) for undergraduate programs in Tiv and Nupe. These specialists met for several days at NUC headquarters to work on the structure, content, and expected learning outcomes for the new programs.
Authorities state that the introduction of degree programs in Tiv and Nupe aims to promote research, scholarship, and a deeper understanding of these languages, while ensuring that younger generations maintain their connection to their cultural identity. This initiative is part of a broader national effort to revitalize indigenous languages, whose use has declined over the years.
This development aligns with ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s higher education sector, where the Federal Government has recently expanded university curricula to include new programs in areas such as artificial intelligence, creative technology, and other emerging fields. By integrating Tiv and Nupe into the university system, the government is reinforcing its commitment to inclusive, diverse, and culturally relevant education.
If fully implemented, degree programs in Tiv and Nupe will create new opportunities for students, linguists, educators, and researchers. These programs are expected to contribute to language preservation, open new academic pathways, and strengthen Nigeria’s rich cultural identity through formal education.
