The federal government has launched a new health initiative offering free liver and kidney function tests to people living with HIV. This initiative aims to improve access to screening tests and the early detection of complications in vulnerable patients. The federal government stated that this measure is part of its broader commitment to strengthening public health support and ensuring comprehensive care for people with chronic illnesses.
Under the program, individuals registered at HIV treatment centers can undergo liver and kidney function tests free of charge. This aims to detect early signs of stress or organ damage, to which HIV patients are particularly vulnerable due to the disease and prolonged medication use. Health officials noted that timely detection and treatment of complications can significantly improve patients’ quality of life and long-term prognosis.
The initiative also seeks to alleviate the financial burden on patients who might struggle to afford expensive diagnostic tests. By offering free tests, the government hopes to encourage more people to regularly monitor their health and reduce the risk of serious complications. Medical experts applauded the program, describing it as a step forward toward comprehensive HIV care.
This health policy underscores the government’s recognition that HIV treatment must extend beyond antiretroviral therapy, addressing overall well-being, including organ health. The free liver and kidney function tests are expected to complement existing treatment programs and contribute to improving the long-term health of people living with HIV across Nigeria.
