President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignations of Farouk Ahmed and Gbenga Komolafe, heads of two key petroleum regulatory agencies in Nigeria.
Farouk Ahmed served as executive director of the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), while Gbenga Komolafe headed the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
Their departures come amid heightened scrutiny of Nigeria’s oil and gas regulatory framework following public accusations and growing demands for reforms in the sector. The resignations mark a significant restructuring of the leadership of the agencies responsible for regulating petroleum activities across the entire value chain.
Following their departure, President Tinubu submitted the names of the new candidates to the Senate for confirmation to fill the vacant positions. The candidates are expected to assume regulatory oversight once they receive approval from the legislators.
The presidency described the leadership changes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the oil sector, which remains a cornerstone of the Nigerian economy. Industry observers say the resignations could signal a new phase of regulatory reforms, particularly as the government seeks to restore confidence among investors and stakeholders in the oil and gas industry.
The Senate is expected to consider the nominations in the coming days as the administration moves to stabilize leadership in the sector.
