Aston Villa’s fairytale title chase gained even more momentum on Sunday when Morgan Rogers scored two stunning goals to secure a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Villa Park.
The 21-year-old midfielder was electrifying, scoring late in the first half and then striking again after the break to seal Aston Villa’s tenth consecutive win in all competitions, their longest run since 1914.
United briefly pulled one back through Matheus Cunha just before halftime, but their resurgence faltered, especially after captain Bruno Fernandes was forced off with a hamstring injury. Key injuries and absences prevented Ruben Amorim’s side from keeping pace.
The victory left Unai Emery’s side just three points behind league leaders Arsenal and one point behind Manchester City, turning what once seemed like a two-horse race into a three-team battle. Remarkably, Villa started the season sluggishly, scoring just one goal in their first five matches, now dreaming of their first league title since 1981.
Villa Park remains a stronghold, and the hosts have lost only once at home in 2025. The atmosphere reached its peak when Emery gleefully threw in his jacket after Rogers’ second goal, and the manager clearly smelled history.
Later, United had chances to equalize, but Emiliano Martinez bravely saved shots from Dalot and Dorgu, and Cunha headed wide in stoppage time. Teenage substitute Jack Fletcher made his Premier League debut, but the moment was overshadowed by United’s second defeat in eleven league matches.
With Fernandes potentially out and limited squad depth, United’s European ambitions face an uncertain few weeks. Meanwhile, Villa are pushing forward, and with such momentum, no one can ignore them in the Premier League title race.
