The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has launched a scathing attack on President Bola Tinubu following the recent US military airstrikes in Sokoto State. In a strongly worded statement released on Friday, the opposition party described the incident as a highlight of the President’s “historic incompetence.” The ADC demanded an immediate and comprehensive report on the operation from the Federal Government.

The statement, signed by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, questioned the rationale behind allowing foreign military forces to conduct operations on Nigerian soil. Abdullahi argued that the administration has effectively taken a “back seat” in managing the country’s security. He stated that reducing Nigeria to “mere informants” in an operation it should be leading is a national embarrassment.

“The African Democratic Congress (ADC) recognizes the serious security challenges confronting Nigeria and affirms that the protection of Nigerian lives and the defeat of terrorism must remain a central national priority,” Abdullahi wrote. However, he warned that the desperation to end terrorism must not lead to a “myopic surrender” of the nation’s sovereignty.

The party spokesperson also criticized the government’s communication strategy regarding the strikes. He expressed dismay that Nigerians had to learn about the operation through a social media post by US President Donald Trump, rather than a direct address from their own leaders. Abdullahi termed this silence a “frightening lack of awareness” of the event’s implications for Nigeria’s strategic interests.

Furthermore, the ADC challenged the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, who had earlier defended the strikes as a collaborative effort. Abdullahi insisted that “collaboration” should not be confused with subservience. He demanded that the government provide specific details on the operational control and the exact number of terrorists killed, rather than relying on vague assurances.

Consequently, the party has called on the Federal Government to come clean to the Nigerian people. Abdullahi urged the administration to disclose the full outcomes of the operation and provide evidence of the “precision hits” claimed by the US. The ADC maintains that true sovereignty requires the Nigerian military to be at the forefront of defense operations.
