To stabilize the situation, Manchester United has turned to a high-profile figure, appointing club legend Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season.
Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news on social media, revealing that a verbal agreement has already been fully finalized, including regarding Carrick’s coaching staff, and that an official announcement from the club is imminent.
At 41, Carrick returns to the Old Trafford sidelines at a crucial time for the Red Devils. A respected figure at the club, the former England international enjoyed a glittering 12-year playing career at United from 2006 to 2018, winning six Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, and several domestic and European trophies.
His appointment follows a tumultuous run that has seen United struggle to maintain form in both the Premier League and European competitions. Faced with mounting pressure and fragile trust, the club has opted to maintain continuity and confidence by handing over the reins to a man who knows the club’s DNA inside and out.
Carrick is no stranger to this role. He was previously an assistant manager at United, coming into the team during periods of transition, earning praise for his calm leadership and tactical clarity. His in-depth knowledge of the squad, the youth system, and the club’s culture is seen as a huge asset as United seeks stability and a strong finish to the season.
He will be supported by Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion on the coaching staff, while Darren Fletcher will return to his duties with the U-21s.
