The United States government has temporarily closed its embassy in Abuja following security concerns over potential demonstrations in the Federal Capital Territory.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, the mission announced that routine services would remain suspended until Monday, March 9, 2026. The decision affects previously scheduled visa interviews and American Citizen Services appointments, which have now been moved to new dates.
The embassy advised applicants to check their email addresses or official visa appointment platforms for updated information. It also directed individuals who do not receive fresh notifications to seek assistance through designated communication channels.
Earlier in the week, the mission had cancelled visa appointments and released a security advisory warning of possible protests in Abuja. The alert referenced tensions surrounding reports of the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, an incident that has sparked outrage among some groups.
According to the advisory, American citizens in the capital were encouraged to avoid crowded areas, limit movement, and stay alert to local developments. The mission further recommended varying travel routes and reviewing emergency exit plans in public spaces as precautionary steps.
The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills Jr., has not issued a separate statement beyond the embassy’s formal notice.
In recent days, demonstrations have reportedly taken place in parts of northern Nigeria, including Abuja and other states, with participants expressing anger over developments linked to Iran. Security agencies are monitoring the situation.
The embassy said it will continue to provide updates through its official communication channels as the situation evolves.
