Prominent political figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, on Wednesday led a protest in Abuja against the Independent National Electoral Commission, accusing the commission of actions capable of undermining Nigeria’s democracy.
Other key figures present at the demonstration included Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and Aminu Tambuwal.
The protest, organised by members and supporters of the African Democratic Congress, commenced at Maitama and proceeded to the INEC headquarters, drawing a large turnout of supporters.
Participants carried placards with various messages demanding fairness and judicial independence, while calling for the protection of democratic institutions.
Speaking during the protest, the leaders accused INEC of acting in favour of the ruling party and warned against any attempt to weaken the country’s electoral process.
They emphasised that the demonstration was aimed at defending democratic values and ensuring transparency in Nigeria’s electoral system.
The protest comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, following INEC’s decision to derecognise factions within the party based on a recent court ruling.
Disagreements over party leadership have deepened divisions, with different groups laying claim to control of the party structure.
Despite the internal crisis, the protesting leaders insisted that their actions were focused on safeguarding democracy and maintaining credible electoral processes in the country.
