The United States is launching a thorough investigation into how its foreign aid has been used in Nigeria and other countries, following concerns over global instability and American interests. The move comes after President Donald Trump decides to suspend all foreign aid for 90 days on January 20, 2025, due to growing calls for a review of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) health funds.

The U.S. Mission to Nigeria confirmed the investigation through a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring that U.S. assistance is effectively reaching those who need it. “We have comprehensive monitoring and evaluation systems to verify that U.S. assistance reaches intended recipients,” the mission stated.

The investigation is set against the backdrop of escalating violence in Nigeria, particularly from the terrorist group Boko Haram. In a strongly worded statement, the U.S. Mission condemned the group’s ongoing attacks and disregard for human life. Boko Haram, which has inflicted significant suffering across Nigeria and the wider region, was officially labeled a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S. Secretary of State in November 2013.

The U.S. government’s designation of Boko Haram aims to block the group’s assets, curtail its fundraising activities, and restrict its members from traveling to the United States. It further reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with Nigeria and regional allies to fight terrorism and enhance security in West Africa.
