The Ebonyi State Government has commenced investigations into 87 public and private schools over allegations of imposing unauthorised levies on students and their parents.
The affected schools are accused of collecting fees for graduation ceremonies, valedictory services and award programmes without approval from relevant authorities, with some of the charges reportedly ranging from ₦2,000 to ₦10,000 per student.
State authorities said the investigation followed complaints from parents and members of the public over the growing financial burden placed on families amid prevailing economic challenges.
According to the government, some schools were also accused of preventing students whose parents failed to pay the levies from participating in examinations and other school activities.
To address the issue, monitoring teams have been deployed across Ebonyi State’s three senatorial districts to verify the allegations and ensure compliance with existing regulations governing school fees and charges.
The state government warned that any school found culpable could face sanctions, including withdrawal of approval to operate and possible prosecution in accordance with applicable laws.
Officials said the action forms part of efforts to protect parents from unauthorised financial demands and ensure that access to education is not hindered by unofficial charges imposed outside approved school fees.
The investigation comes amid increasing concerns over the rising cost of education and the pressure facing many Nigerian households as inflation continues to affect living standards across the country.
