APC Fixes August 22 for State, Federal Legislative Primaries

The All Progressives Congress has fixed August 22, 2026, as the deadline for the withdrawal or substitution of its presidential and National Assembly candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development follows the party’s ongoing efforts to finalise its list of candidates and resolve issues arising from its primary elections and subsequent nomination process.

The deadline is contained in the electoral timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 elections. The commission had scheduled August 22 as the last day for political parties to withdraw or substitute candidates for the presidential and National Assembly elections.

The APC had earlier submitted the names and nomination details of its candidates to INEC following its primary elections. However, the party has continued to deal with disputes and adjustments arising from the emergence of candidates in some constituencies.

They  had begun uploading the nomination details of its candidates to the INEC portal, while efforts were also ongoing to reconcile grievances within the party. The party’s Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, said the reconciliation process would address complaints arising from the emergence of candidates.

For governorship and State House of Assembly candidates, the applicable deadline is September 19, according to the INEC timetable. The commission is expected to publish the personal particulars of governorship and State House of Assembly candidates on August 29.

The deadlines are part of the preparations for the 2027 general elections, with INEC scheduled to publish the final list of presidential and National Assembly candidates on September 12.
