Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has walked back his harsh comments about Ademola Lookman following their UEFA Champions League exit against Club Brugge, insisting he never meant to disrespect the Nigerian star.
Lookman, returning from injury, made an instant impact by scoring shortly after being subbed in. However, his missed penalty later in the game triggered Gasperini’s frustration, leading him to call Lookman “the worst penalty taker” he had ever seen. The comment didn’t sit well with Lookman, who reportedly felt disrespected.
Now, Gasperini is clarifying his stance, praising the forward’s abilities and potential.
“Lookman felt offended, but that was never my intention. He had a fantastic approach against Club Brugge,” Gasperini said. “If he trains to improve his penalties, with his exceptional skills, he could even become our first-choice taker.”
Atalanta, currently third in Serie A, will look to bounce back in their upcoming league fixture against Empoli on Sunday.
