Atalanta co-owner Stephen Pagliuca has admitted that manager Gian Piero Gasperini made a mistake with his public comments regarding Ademola Lookman but reaffirmed his belief that Gasperini remains a “great, passionate coach” for the club. This admission follows a fallout between the two after Gasperini criticized Lookman for missing a penalty against Club Brugge in the Champions League, calling him “one of the worst” penalty takers.
Speaking to Gazzetta, Pagliuca emphasized the club’s commitment to resolving the situation, stating, “We want to put this behind us, and I think we have, especially after our 5-0 victory against Empoli.” He highlighted the passion that fuels the team’s competitive spirit but also acknowledged that Gasperini’s comments about Lookman were misplaced. “He made a mistake by speaking about an individual,” Pagliuca admitted.
Pagliuca also reiterated the club’s values, explaining, “At Atalanta, with the Percassi family, we have a policy: if things go wrong, we take responsibility. We look at ourselves and how to improve.” He praised Lookman and the team for their outstanding performances this season, noting, “The players have been exceptional, and we wouldn’t be where we are now without the contributions of Lookman, De Ketelaere, and the entire team.”
The Atalanta co-owner also addressed Gasperini’s emotional reaction, stating that it was an unfortunate departure from the club’s usual approach. “It was a mistake that went against our policy, and we are not proud of it. But Gasp remains a great coach,” Pagliuca emphasized.
In addition to the controversy surrounding Lookman, Pagliuca discussed Gasperini’s contract situation, revealing that the manager has decided not to renew his deal with Atalanta, which expires in 2026 or at the end of the current season. “This is something Luca Percassi will handle,” Pagliuca said. “He takes care of these matters. We will do whatever Gasp believes is the best solution for him.”
Despite the recent tensions, Atalanta’s focus remains on continuing their strong season, with both the players and coach committed to pushing forward for success.
