About Eight Soldiers Killed as Military Convoy Hits IED in Borno

About eight Nigerian soldiers were killed on Thursday when a military convoy struck an improvised explosive device in Borno State, according to reports.

Troops attached to the 24 Task Force Brigade in Dikwa were returning to their base from Maiduguri after escorting foodstuffs and other logistics when the lead vehicle, a gun truck, detonated the device. The soldiers travelling in that vehicle died on the spot, a military source was quoted as saying in a report by Sahara Reporters published on Friday.

The attack was attributed to suspected militants of the Islamic State West Africa Province. The exact time of the incident was not specified, and the names and ranks of the deceased had not been officially confirmed at the time of the report.

The development was reflected in Nigerian news roundups on Friday that carried headlines describing eight soldiers as feared killed in a Borno bomb explosion involving a military convoy. The Thursday incident is distinct from earlier separate improvised explosive device attacks reported in other parts of Borno in previous months.

Roadside bombs remain a recurring threat along military supply routes in the north-east, where troops regularly move personnel and materials between locations such as Maiduguri and Dikwa.
