UMUAHIA – Suspended Abia State lawmaker, Hon. Dennis Rowland Caesar, has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Labour Party (LP), citing his admiration for Governor Alex Otti’s leadership.
Caesar, who represents Isiala Ngwa South State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, made the announcement during a plenary session in Umuahia. His defection comes after his PDP ward chapter suspended him over alleged anti-party activities, particularly his public endorsement of Governor Otti’s second-term bid.
Reacting to the move, the Abia PDP declared that Caesar had automatically lost his seat, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize a by-election.
“The seat and mandate belong to the PDP. Hon. Caesar’s continued occupancy of his seat is unconstitutional. We are formally petitioning INEC to declare his seat vacant and commence the process of a by-election,” said PDP Publicity Secretary, Eric Iwuagwu.
The PDP referenced Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates lawmakers to vacate their positions if they defect without a clear division in their party. The party also vowed to take legal action to enforce the rule.
As political tensions rise in Abia, all eyes are now on INEC’s next move regarding Caesar’s seat.
