The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has strongly condemned the abduction of four female students from Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University (formerly Federal University of Agriculture), Makurdi, Benue State.
In a statement released on Thursday, CONUA National President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, described the incident as a “heinous and unacceptable act” that underscores the growing insecurity in Nigerian universities.
“These students were ambushed by armed men while simply trying to pursue their education. This tragic event has rightfully sparked outrage and led to the temporary closure of the university,” the statement read.
CONUA is calling for urgent and decisive action from both the university authorities and the government to:
- Ensure the immediate rescue of the abducted students – Security agencies must act swiftly, as every second counts in ensuring their safe return.
- Strengthen campus security – Universities must implement proactive security measures, including surveillance, collaboration with security forces, and improved safety infrastructure.
- Prioritize education security nationwide – Schools and universities must not remain easy targets for criminals. The federal government must enact a comprehensive policy to protect students and staff.
“This is not just about one university—it is a national crisis. Education should be a safe space, not a battleground,” Dr. Sunmonu emphasized.
CONUA reaffirmed its solidarity with the victims, their families, and the entire academic community, urging authorities to act swiftly and decisively to bring an end to the rising attacks on education in Nigeria.
