The political storm in the Lagos State House of Assembly intensified on Friday as 35 lawmakers arrived at the Lagos State High Court for a crucial hearing over the controversial removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Obasa, ousted on January 13, 2025, by at least 36 of his colleagues while he was reportedly out of the country, is challenging his removal in court. Represented by his legal counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), Obasa insists his removal was unlawful and is seeking judicial intervention.

Meanwhile, the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, has assembled a formidable legal team led by Prof. Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), alongside several other prominent lawyers, including Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) and Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN).

Adding fuel to the fire, the Lagos Assembly has condemned what it calls an “invasion” by Obasa and three of his loyalists, who allegedly attempted to hold an unsanctioned plenary session on Thursday. In a strongly worded statement, House spokesman Hon. Steve Ogundipe dismissed the session as unconstitutional, stating that a valid sitting requires proper notice, a quorum, and the mace—none of which were met.

Despite the political turbulence, the Assembly reaffirmed its support for Speaker Meranda, shutting down rumors of her resignation. The lawmakers also emphasized their commitment to working within the law and alongside the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership to resolve the crisis.

With tensions running high and the court battle underway, all eyes are on the judiciary to determine the next chapter in Lagos Assembly politics.
