Panic erupted on Friday evening as a fire broke out at the Ago Medical Centre, located off Ago Palace Way in Okota, Lagos. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) responded swiftly, successfully containing the blaze before it could spread further.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, revealed in a statement that the agency activated its emergency response plan immediately after receiving distress calls at 6:29 p.m. Within minutes, LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team arrived at the scene, discovering that parts of the medical facility had been engulfed in flames.
Preliminary investigations pointed to a power surge as the cause of the fire, which erupted when public electricity was restored. Despite the intensity of the blaze, no casualties or injuries were recorded.
“The prompt intervention of our emergency responders prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. Our teams are still on-site, working to fully extinguish the remaining flames and ensure total safety,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
The operation saw a collaborative effort from multiple emergency units, including the LASEMA Fire Unit, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Police Force.
While the fire is now under control, investigations are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage.
