FIFA President Gianni Infantino has doubled down on his support for Saudi Arabia as the host of the 2034 World Cup, dismissing concerns over human rights issues and the bidding process. Speaking in Belfast on Friday, Infantino defended FIFA’s decision, calling it a “unifying step for football” and highlighting the global rotation of the tournament across continents.
The Gulf kingdom’s selection sparked backlash due to its human rights record, treatment of migrant workers, and criminalization of same-sex relationships. Norway’s football federation previously voiced opposition to the process, but Infantino insisted FIFA had conducted an “in-depth report” before awarding the tournament.
Infantino also addressed questions about his close ties with former U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, was involved in the FIFA Club World Cup draw last December, and Infantino previously attended Trump’s inauguration.
Defending his connections, Infantino stressed the importance of strong relationships with world leaders, particularly as FIFA prepares to host the expanded 32-team Club World Cup in the U.S. this year and the 2026 World Cup across North America.
On Russia’s potential return to international football, Infantino expressed hope that peace negotiations in Ukraine would allow for global participation in the sport. He emphasized football’s role in fostering unity, stating, “If peace is achieved, we will do our part.”
