A tragic scene unfolded in Lekki, Lagos, as a three-storey building under construction caved in, leaving two people dead and at least 14 others rescued from the rubble.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Oriwu Street, with laborers trapped beneath the debris. Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), police, fire service, and medical teams, swiftly launched a rescue operation.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that while the immediate cause of the collapse remains unknown, efforts were in full swing to clear the wreckage and search for any remaining victims. Heavy-duty equipment, including excavators, was deployed to aid the operation.
The Lagos State Police Command’s spokesman, Benjamin Hudenyin, stated that all rescued victims were rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital for treatment.
Authorities have yet to confirm the reason behind the structural failure, but concerns over building safety regulations in Lagos have once again come to the forefront.
Rescue operations continue as officials investigate the cause of the collapse.
