The Court of Appeal in Abuja has hit the brakes on the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano, pending the outcome of an appeal at the Supreme Court.

In a dramatic turn of events, the appellate court ruled in favor of an injunction, effectively putting a hold on the Kano State Government’s move to dissolve newly created emirates and restore Sanusi to the throne. The decision follows a legal battle that has seen multiple rulings on the controversial Kano Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024.

The ruling, delivered by a three-member panel led by Justice Okon Abang, emphasizes the need to maintain the status quo until the Supreme Court delivers a final verdict. The court also reinforced that chieftaincy matters are under the jurisdiction of state high courts, not the Federal High Court.

For now, Kano’s royal seat remains in legal limbo, as all eyes turn to Nigeria’s apex court for the final word on the emirate’s future.
