Nollywood actress Ayo Adesanya has bravely shared the harrowing story of her decade-long battle with domestic violence and how it nearly drove her into alcoholism.

In an emotional interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Adesanya opened up about the silent suffering she endured in her previous marriage, the constant cycle of abuse, and the dark path she found herself on while trying to cope.

“I Didn’t Even Realize I Was Depressed”

Reflecting on those painful years, the actress revealed that despite moments of laughter, the abuse never stopped.

“For ten good years, it wasn’t going anywhere. The beatings were there, the violence was there—it was just a cycle that wouldn’t end,” she confessed.

The weight of it all pushed her into a deep depression, one she didn’t even recognize at the time. Seeking an escape from the emotional and physical pain, she turned to alcohol.

“I started drinking. I would sneak out, buy a bottle of brandy, and just drink to numb myself. A whole bottle, sometimes more. I became a drunk—forget it, I was gone.”

Secretly Drinking to Survive

Adesanya painted a haunting picture of her desperate attempts to drown her suffering. She recalled how she would discreetly buy alcohol from a chemist in Surulere, hide it, and drink in solitude.

“There was a chemist near where we stayed. I would go there, buy a bottle, hide it, and drink at home. I didn’t want to feel anything—not the pain, not the beatings, nothing.”

While she didn’t delve into how she finally broke free, the actress credits divine intervention for pulling her out of that dark place.
