Court Orders Woman to Drop Ex-Husband’s Name—11 Years After Divorce

A Rivers State Customary Court in Rumuogba has ruled that Mrs. Kate Ngbor must stop using her ex-husband’s surname, 11 years after their divorce.

The ruling came after Chief Sam Ngbor filed Suit No: OCC/9/2021, seeking a court order to prevent his former wife from continuing to bear his name.

Following legal arguments from both parties—E.O. Erhirhi, counsel for the claimant, and R.U. Egwenre, representing the defendant—the court ruled in favor of Chief Ngbor.

In its judgment, the court declared that Mrs. Kate Ngbor had no right to continue using “Ngbor” or “Sam-Ngbor” unless granted explicit permission by her former husband.

The court further ordered her to revert to her maiden name or any other name of her choosing, except Ngbor.

With this decision, the court officially stripped her of the name, barring her from using it in any capacity or presenting herself under that identity.
