Brigadier-General Maharazu Tsiga (retd.), the former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has regained his freedom after spending a harrowing 56 days in captivity. Tsiga was abducted on February 5, 2025, from his hometown in the Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, alongside nine other residents.
After enduring weeks of captivity, Tsiga’s release came following the payment of a hefty ransom by his family. While earlier reports suggested a sum of N60 million was paid for his release, sources close to the family confirmed that the actual ransom amount was far higher, three times the initially reported figure.
According to a close family member, after the ransom was delivered to the kidnappers, they remained silent for a week. It wasn’t until March 11, when the kidnappers finally reached out, that the family was able to hear Tsiga’s voice. “The money was taken to them, and it was only after one week, on Tuesday, March 11, that we heard from him,” the source revealed.
Despite the initial payment, the kidnappers demanded even more money, though no additional funds were provided. The source confirmed that the kidnappers are currently in Zamfara State and are planning to transport Tsiga to Abuja.
A senior military source has also confirmed Tsiga’s release to Daily Trust, assuring the public that the former NYSC DG is in good condition. This long-awaited freedom marks the end of a tense and uncertain period for Tsiga’s family and the nation.
